Tooth Extractions
Sometimes, the best thing we can do for your long-term wellbeing is to remove a failing tooth. When a tooth is beyond saving, an extraction can set up your smile for a healthier future.
Schedule a ConsultationHow We Can Help
Oral surgeons are often the best choice to perform a precise tooth extraction. Our surgeons bring specialty-level training, advanced imaging technology, and a comprehensive understanding of oral anatomy to every procedure. That means fewer complications, better planning, and recovery tailored to you. We take a whole-patient view to tailor care to support your overall dental health.
When Extraction Is the Right Answer
Most people don’t arrive at this decision lightly. Extractions are typically recommended when a tooth poses a risk to the rest of your mouth, or when saving it simply isn’t possible.
Common Reasons Include:
- Decay too extensive for a filling or crown to address
- Advanced gum disease that has compromised the supporting bone
- A cracked or fractured tooth that cannot be restored
- Overcrowding that’s preventing proper alignment or orthodontic treatment
- An impacted or infected tooth causing pain or threatening neighboring teeth
Our surgeons take the time to review your imaging, discuss your options, and make sure you understand why a particular path is being recommended — before any decisions are made.
What to Expect
Knowing what’s ahead makes a real difference. Here’s how the process unfolds at Tyler Oral Facial Surgery.
Initial Consultation:
Your journey begins with an evaluation to get a complete picture of the tooth’s position, root structure, and surrounding anatomy. From there, we’ll walk you through what to expect with the procedure, your sedation options, and any pre-surgical instructions.
The Procedure:
Simple extractions involve gently loosening and removing a fully erupted tooth under local anesthetic. Surgical extractions require a small incision and may involve sectioning the tooth for safer removal. In either case, we’ll make sure you feel as comfortable as possible.
Pain Management:
Sedation should help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your procedure. Afterward, prescription or over-the-counter pain management options will be discussed to help you manage any initial swelling and discomfort at home. Most patients return to light activity and daily routines within a few days.
Recovery and Aftercare
The procedure itself is fairly straightforward. A smooth recovery comes down to the first few days of healing — and we’ll make sure you feel prepared and confident to heal at home.
Immediate Aftercare
If you’re experiencing bleeding and some swelling at home, which is to be expected for the first day or two, you can bite gently on gauze to help support the blood clot that’s forming. Keep your head elevated, apply ice in short intervals, and avoid anything that could dislodge the clot. Stay away from using things like straws, smoking, and forcefully rinsing your mouth in those early hours.
If bleeding becomes intense or you have questions about your recovery, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
Recovery Tips
During the first few days, we recommend a soft food diet. Plan a few nutritious, easy-to-digest foods like yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, warm (not hot) soups, and smoothies (without the straw). As you begin to feel better, you can gradually reintroduce more texture — but listen to your body.
Oral hygiene matters too, especially in recovery. Brush gently around the extraction site, avoid direct contact with the area, and rinse carefully with warm salt water after the first 24 hours. Keeping the site clean reduces the risk of dry sockets and infection.
And of course, the best thing you can do is simply rest. Limit physical exertion for at least the first day or two. Elevated blood pressure can increase bleeding and slow down your recovery.

Schedule a ConsultationCommon Questions
Cost varies based on whether the extraction is simple or surgical, which tooth is being removed, and your insurance coverage. During your consultation, we’ll provide a clear breakdown of fees and review your financial options before any treatment begins.
Most patients are relieved to find that it’s far less uncomfortable than they expected. Your surgeon will ensure the area is completely numb before starting, and sedation options are available if anxiety is a concern. Post-procedure soreness is normal and typically manageable within a few days with rest and appropriate pain relief.
For a straightforward extraction, most patients feel significantly better within two to three days. Surgical extractions — particularly impacted wisdom teeth — may require a week or more of rest and recovery. Your surgeon will give you a realistic timeline based on the specifics of your case, so you can plan accordingly.
