Cleft Lip and Palate Repair

A cleft lip or palate is something a child is born with, but it doesn’t have to define their future. Surgical repair can restore function, support healthy development, and give your child the confident start they deserve.

What Is Cleft Lip and Palate?

A cleft lip is a separation in the upper lip that can range from a small notch to a complete split extending toward the nose. A cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth that can affect feeding, speech, and overall oral function. Both conditions occur during fetal development and can appear together or on their own.

The causes aren’t always clear. Genetics, nutritional factors, and certain prenatal exposures may all play a role. What matters most is that effective treatment is available, and your child’s care team is here to guide your family through every step.

Why Early Intervention Matters

When cleft conditions are treated early, outcomes tend to be significantly improved. Surgery performed in infancy or early childhood helps prevent long-term complications including speech difficulties, dental problems, and challenges with eating. Early repair also supports healthy facial development to set a stronger foundation for your child as they grow.

Our Approach to Cleft Lip and Palate Repair

Every child’s situation is unique, and so is their treatment plan. Our surgeons begin with a thorough evaluation of the cleft’s severity, its impact on function, and your child’s overall development. From there, we work closely with pediatricians, orthodontists, and speech therapists to coordinate holistic care that goes beyond the operating room.

We use leading-edge surgical techniques and 3D imaging to plan each procedure with precision. Some cases require a single surgery; others involve a carefully staged approach over time. Either way, your child will receive the individualized attention their care requires. This includes support for their recovery, nutrition, and speech development along the way.

Common Questions About Cleft Lip and Palate Repair

Timing depends on the type and severity of the cleft. Cleft lip repair is typically performed around 3 to 6 months of age, while cleft palate repair is often completed between 9 and 18 months. Your surgeon will work with your child’s broader care team to determine the timing that best supports their development and long-term health.

It depends. Simpler cases may be fully addressed in a single procedure, but more complex clefts often require a staged approach as your child grows. Additional treatments, such as orthodontic care or minor refinements, may also be recommended over time. Your care team will walk you through what to expect well in advance.

Recovery varies depending on the procedure, but most children resume normal activity within a few weeks. Your care team will provide detailed instructions for feeding, managing recovery, and follow-up visits. We stay closely involved throughout the healing process to make sure your child is progressing well, and your family feels completely supported throughout.

First off, let me salute the fantastic nursing staff, without a shoutout to Laura who kept me laughing while getting ready for sedation even with my veins rolling in the deep. Second, Dr. Ryan Hinkle. The man, the myth, THE LEGEND. He’s got the softest hands in the south, and boy do they know how to extract some teeth. This is the second time I’ve used him, and I always leave well taken care of, with a chapstick, and a smile on my face despite just having oral surgery. I will not let anyone else rip a tooth out of my head besides this man.

Have had 3 procedures done here (counting today) by Dr. Hinkle and all have been great! The staff is always amazing and I had a great time visiting and laughing with his nurse Ms. Laura as she got me ready for my extraction this morning, I wasn’t nervous since this is old hat for me at this point lol, but had I been, she definitely would’ve put me at ease! And Dr. Hinkle calling to check in later in the evening of procedures to make sure everything’s going ok and there are no questions that have popped up is always appreciated as well. Only bummer was my insurance not being accepted here anymore, but my insurance sucks anyway and didn’t cover any other oral surgeons any closer to home than Tyler (I live about 1.5 hours away) so still decided to come back since I’ve had so many positive experiences here in the past. Thank you Dr. Hinkle, his team, and the rest of the staff! Taylor Tanner

Nobody jumps up and down with excitement to have oral surgery but it is comforting to know you are receiving care from such a caring and knowledgeable team!
